Volunteer at a Shelter
Having a deep pool of capable and willing volunteers is vital to the success of this mission. We need you!
Per the State of NH Department of Safety regulations, it is required that we have two adults, awake and on-site when the shelter is open. In addition, each volunteer is required to be CPR/First Aid certified. PUMC/MCC is happy to provide this as well as orientation training to all volunteers. Volunteers must be willing to sign a confidentiality agreement and agree to a background check.
We can offer flexible shifts. If you’re a morning person, come in at 5 AM to relieve a night shift. Are you a night owl? Cover a 6 to 11 PM shift. Let us know what works for you!

Spread the Word and Advocate!
Advocate for and support affordable housing initiatives in your town by attending and/or speaking at Planning Board meetings. Or better yet, join your local land use board!
Funds may be used to:
Keep a family or individual in their current home
Assist with funds to get a family or individual into a new home
Assist a family or individual with needs associated with temporary shelter.
For example
A single mom, who is employed and qualified for a local apartment, but did not have enough saved for the extra months’ rent. She had been living in her car, while her child was staying with a family member.
A single male with mental health challenges and no vehicle, who was staying at a local campground. He did not have the funds to pay for the entire two-week stay up front, which is required.
A young family whose apartment was in disrepair and needed to vacate immediately. They were approved for a new apartment but did not have enough saved for the security deposit for their new home plus 1st month rent.
An elderly person needing a medical procedure who was living in a vehicle needed a more stable shelter while recovering. A hotel stay was provided through a collaboration between the agency, town welfare, and an EMHSC partner.
In order to qualify for assistance, matching funds from the client and the requesting agency are required, followed by review and approval from the EMHSC Advisory Committee.
A typical security deposit/1st month’s rent is between $1500-$2000.
A two-week campground stay costs about $250.
Two nights in a hotel typically costs about $500.
